Michael (Mike) Dunleavy serves as Chief Executive Officer of Van Metre Companies, a more than 70-year-old, privately held homebuilder and housing component manufacturer headquartered in Northern Virginia. Van Metre Homes was recognized as the 2022 Homebuilder of the Year in 2022 by ProBuilder Magazine.  The company is also an owner and manager of apartment communities across Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Florida. 

Mike was promoted to CEO after serving as Chief Financial Officer, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s long-term financial and governance strategy. As CEO, his mandate is to guide Van Metre from a successful multi-generational business into a century-long enterprise, with a focus on strengthening culture, enhancing governance, and ensuring financial durability that can stand the test of time. 

During his tenure as CFO, Mike was instrumental in developing and executing the company’s capital strategy, including raising equity from institutional partners, advancing forward-looking financial forecasting capabilities, and optimizing debt structures. He also contributed meaningfully to governance planning, helping lead the transition of the business from the second to the third generation of family ownership. 

Mike joined Van Metre in 2018 as Vice President of Finance for Investment Properties and was promoted to Senior Vice President of Finance in 2022, overseeing financial operations across the entire organization. In these roles, he championed best-in-class financial systems and processes while fostering a culture that closely aligned finance teams with on-site operators to drive strong performance. 

Prior to joining Van Metre, Mike was a Certified Public Accountant with experience in CFO consulting at Capital CFO LLC and began his career as an auditor at KPMG, focusing on real estate and private equity clients. 

Mike holds both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Accountancy from Virginia Tech and serves on the Virginia Tech Department of Real Estate Board. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his wife and three children and coaching their lacrosse teams.
